The Story So Far
Amy Acton is an American physician and public health leader who was elected governor of Ohio on November 3, 2026. A Democrat, she defeated Republican Vivek Ramaswamy and became the first woman elected governor in Ohio history. The election has been called by the Associated Press, although official certification remains pending.
Acton grew up in Youngstown, Ohio, and has publicly discussed experiencing poverty and housing instability during childhood. Her personal background became a central theme of her gubernatorial campaign, particularly her focus on economic opportunity and affordability.
Acton trained as a physician and earned a master's degree in public health. Before entering statewide government, she worked in public health and nonprofit leadership, focusing on healthcare access and community well-being.
Republican Governor Mike DeWine appointed Acton director of the Ohio Department of Health in 2019. She became widely known during the early COVID-19 pandemic, when she helped lead Ohio's public health response and appeared alongside DeWine during statewide briefings.
Her pandemic leadership attracted both praise and criticism. Supporters credited her with communicating public health risks, while critics challenged restrictions and other measures implemented during the emergency. She resigned as health director in June 2020.
Acton entered the 2026 gubernatorial race against Republican Vivek Ramaswamy, a biotechnology entrepreneur and former presidential candidate. Her campaign emphasized affordability, healthcare, public education, government accountability, and economic opportunity.
She ran with David Pepper as her lieutenant governor candidate. On November 3, major news organizations projected her victory. Acton is expected to succeed term-limited Republican Governor Mike DeWine in January 2027.
