The Story So Far

Amy Klobuchar is an American attorney and Democratic-Farmer-Labor politician who was elected governor of Minnesota on November 3, 2026. She defeated Republican Lisa Demuth and became the first woman elected governor in Minnesota history. The election results remain unofficial pending certification.

Born in Plymouth, Minnesota, Klobuchar graduated from Yale University in 1982 and earned her law degree from the University of Chicago in 1985. She worked as an attorney before entering elected public office.

In 1998, Klobuchar was elected Hennepin County attorney, becoming the first woman elected to that position. She served from 1999 through 2006, overseeing prosecutions in Minnesota's most populous county.

Klobuchar was elected to the United States Senate in 2006 and took office in January 2007. She won reelection in 2012, 2018, and 2024. Her Senate career included work on antitrust, consumer protection, agriculture, infrastructure, and election administration.

She sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020 before ending her campaign and endorsing Joe Biden. She subsequently continued serving in the Senate.

Klobuchar entered Minnesota's 2026 gubernatorial race after Governor Tim Walz announced he would not seek a third term. Her campaign emphasized affordability, government accountability, preventing fraud in state programs, and economic development.

On November 3, 2026, Klobuchar and running mate Ben Schierer defeated Republican Lisa Demuth and Ryan Wilson. Klobuchar is expected to succeed Walz in January 2027.
