The Story So Far
Byron Donalds is an American Republican politician elected governor of Florida on November 3, 2026. He defeated Democratic nominee David Jolly in a closely contested election. Donalds is expected to become Florida's first Black governor and the first elected Black Republican governor in United States history.
Donalds grew up in Brooklyn, New York, and graduated from Florida State University with a degree in finance and marketing. Before entering elected office, he worked in banking, finance, and insurance in Southwest Florida.
He was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2016. During his legislative service, he held leadership responsibilities on education, insurance, and banking committees. His legislative work included education, criminal justice, and financial policy.
Donalds was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2020 and began representing Florida's 19th Congressional District in January 2021. He became a prominent Republican congressional figure and an ally of President Donald Trump.
In 2026, Donalds campaigned to succeed term-limited Governor Ron DeSantis. His campaign emphasized Republican governance, property taxes, insurance costs, and economic issues. The race against former Republican congressman David Jolly, who ran as a Democrat, was considerably closer than many earlier forecasts suggested.
Donalds won the gubernatorial election according to projections by major news organizations. Florida's election-night vote totals remained unofficial as of November 4, 2026.
