The Story So Far
Deb Haaland is an American politician and member of Laguna Pueblo who was elected governor of New Mexico on November 3, 2026. She defeated Republican Gregg Hull and is expected to become the first Native American woman to serve as governor of a U.S. state. The election results remain unofficial pending certification.
Haaland was born in Winslow, Arizona, in 1960. Her mother was a member of Laguna Pueblo, and her father served in the United States Marine Corps. Haaland grew up in a military family and later attended the University of New Mexico, where she earned undergraduate and law degrees.
Before entering Congress, Haaland worked in Democratic Party organizing and served as chair of the Democratic Party of New Mexico from 2015 to 2017.
In 2018, Haaland was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from New Mexico's 1st Congressional District. Alongside Sharice Davids of Kansas, she became one of the first two Native American women elected to Congress.
President Joe Biden nominated Haaland to serve as secretary of the interior. After Senate confirmation in 2021, she became the first Native American to serve as a U.S. cabinet secretary. Her department oversaw federal public lands, natural resources, tribal affairs, and conservation programs.
Haaland left the Interior Department in 2025 and ran for governor of New Mexico in 2026. Her campaign emphasized affordability, healthcare access, housing, education, public safety, and economic opportunity.
She won the Democratic nomination in June 2026 and faced former Rio Rancho Mayor Gregg Hull in the November general election. Her running mate was Stephanie Garcia Richard.
The Associated Press called the election for Haaland on November 3. She is expected to succeed term-limited Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham in January 2027.
